Over 73 years ago, I participated for the first time in the track and field events organized by the Ministry of Knowledge (now the Ministry of Education). At the time, I was in the sixth grade and competed in the 800m race across Baghdad, finishing in sixth place. In the following years, during my secondary school stage, my participation in championships increased, and I consistently secured first place. I won the Iraq Cup in the 1945–1946 championship and again in 1947–1948, setting a new record of (2:00.8) for the 800m race. Upon entering the Military College in 1950, a new phase of competition began at the college and national university levels, where I also maintained my first-place rank. By 1952, I participated in the Iraq Provinces Open Championship, securing first place and breaking the two-minute barrier for the first time with a new record of (1:59.9). This achievement qualified me for the First Arab Games in Egypt (1953), competing in the 800m and both relay events (4x100m and 4x400m), where we secured second place in both relays. Later, I competed alongside the late Jafar Mohammed Saleh in the Athens Championship in Greece, and subsequently represented Iraq in Tunisia under the bilateral sports protocol, where I won first place in my race, alongside excellent results from the rest of the Iraqi team.
