The 14th Anniversary of the Departure of the Legend: "Ammo Baba" These days mark the 14th anniversary of the passing of my dear friend, Ammo Baba, the founding pillar of football in Iraq and the Arab world. This star first shone as a player in the 1950s while in Habbaniya, where he also excelled in track and field (400m hurdles) and tennis. His brilliance as a player was matched by his early success as a coach for local clubs. He distinguished himself in the Military College, the Royal Guard, and the Iraqi Military National Team, eventually earning the rank of Captain in the Iraqi Army. After a legendary career as a player for the National Team, leading Iraq to numerous achievements, he seamlessly transitioned into a historic coaching career for the National Team and various Iraqi clubs. Below is a photograph of the legend Ammo Baba (whose real name is Emmanuel Baba Dawud), which he gifted to me in Tunisia during a sports tournament in 1960, along with a collection of photos of us together.
